Why Go Green
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the world population is growing at an astounding rate. It is estimated that the population will increase to over 9 billion by 2050. With this increasing population , comes the potential for a multitude of environmental problems. Especially depletion of our natural resources.
Americans especially have a great impact on the world around us:
- Americans constitute 5% of the world's population but consume 24% of the world's energy.
- On average, one American consumes as much energy as
2 Japanese
6 Mexicans
13 Chinese
31 Indians
128 Bangladeshis
307 Tanzanians
370 Ethiopians
- Americans eat 815 billion calories of food each day , roughly 200 billion more than needed, enough to feed 80 million people.
- Americans throw out 200,000 tons of edible food daily.
- The average American generates 52 tons of garbage by age 75.
- The average individual daily consumption of water is 159 gallons, while more than half the world's population lives on 25 gallons.
There are so many things we can do as individuals, as families, as a whole society to reduce our negative impact.
- Buy organic and sustainable, buy less, buy used.
- Take reusable bags when shopping.
- Choose phosphate-free, low-phosphate or biodegradable dishwashing liquid and least-toxic cleaning products.
- Turn off your computer, small appliances, lights, etc. when not in use.
- Use reusables, at home and away from home. That includes kitchenware - cups, glasses, plates, chop sticks and other eating utensils and storage containers. It also includes linens, especially napkins and towels.
- Recycle.
